Mirkarimi: Better as sheriff than supervisor

Photo by Luke Thomas for Fog City Journal

I was Mirkarimi's harshest critic when he was a supervisor, but he seems to be turning into a good sheriff, as he advocates sensible changes at the county jail like this:

Under the proposed law, people who are awaiting trial could be released from custody without posting bail if they agreed to wear an ankle bracelet; the legislation would also allow more convicted offenders to serve out their time at home by giving the sheriff’s department more discretion to decide who is eligible.

Mirkarimi said the legislation is mostly aimed at the county’s pretrial population---currently, anywhere from 50 to 75 percent of the approximately 1,400 in county jail at any given time are awaiting trial. The sheriff’s department would look at each inmate and decide, on a case-by-case basis with public safety in mind, who would qualify, he said...
