2015: 41 homeless deaths

41 homeless people died in San Francisco between December, 2014, and the end of 2015. This tally is compiled from the Homeless Death Forms from the Department of Public Health.

The first nine people on the list died in December, 2014. Since they weren't counted in the 2014 homeless deaths, they are included in 2015.

Save the historic street lamps on Van Ness Avenue

In 1947, Friedel Klussman stood up to City Hall and stopped the demolition of our iconic Cable Cars. Now, another landmark needs your help.

The unique street lamps that were installed on Van Ness Avenue in 1936 to create a “ribbon of light” leading to the newly opened Golden Gate Bridge are slated for destruction.

These lamps are graceful geographic markers that indicate to everybody that they are in San Francisco, but are set to be replaced. To me the new lamp concept looks like the scythe carried by the Grim Reaper but you be the judge.

Please Save Our Historic Lamps!

City Hall finally taking responsibility for city trees

Coalition for Healthy Trees and Safe
Sidewalks
Yes on Proposition E

Transfers all responsibility for the care and maintenance of street trees back to the city, with no cost to taxpayers.

Requires the city to fix all tree-related sidewalk damage (over 90% of sidewalk damage is tree-related), and assume liability for trip-and-fall lawsuits.

Removes personal liability from property owners for tree-related trip-and-fall injuries on public sidewalks, and for injuries or property damage due to limb drops/tree falls.

Requires that $500,000 of the city’s tree budget be spent on the care and maintenance of trees in public schoolyards, ensuring they are not a danger to children or staff...

Coastal Commission rejects Banning Ranch project

NEWPORT BEACH – After a more than 13-hour marathon meeting of the California Coastal Commission, a room packed with some 100 demonstrators exploded in cheers Wednesday when commissioners voted to deny a proposed development in Newport Beach on Banning Ranch, an oil field covered in vernal pools, scrub and grassland and home to endangered species.

“This is a project we have to get right,” said Commissioner Mary Shallenberger. “We’ve heard this is the only intact coastal bluff ecosystem in Southern California. It is the largest concentration of endangered and threatened species in Orange County....You can’t make a mistake with that and turn back when you find you haven’t had it quite right. If we don’t get it right, things will be lost forever.”

The commission’s vote of 9 to 1 to deny the proposed development halts a 20-year battle between preservationists and developers---if only for a while. Developers can resubmit another set of substantially different plans to the commission in six months with a fee of at least $250,000.

Earlier in the day, project managers for the proposed housing and retail project at Banning Ranch described the latest recommendation from the California Coastal Commission staff for Banning Ranch as an illegal land grab.

The agency’s leader, Jack Ainsworth, however, urged commissioners to consider the environmental impact of a big development on the property....
